Richard and Roberta Walsh Make Gift in Estate Plan to Endow Scholarship
Giving back to Suffolk comes in many forms. Suffolk University alumnus, Richard (Dick) J. Walsh, Esq., BA’58, JD’60 and his wife, Roberta W. Walsh, PhD, have chosen to give back to provide scholarship assistance for current and future law students.
Dick, a Dorchester native, served in the U.S. Army after receiving his Suffolk degrees. He then began his career working at the Interstate Commerce Commission, followed by the Federal Trade Commission, where he met his wife of 45 years, Roberta, a Framingham State University graduate.
When the couple was preparing their estate plan, both wanted to include gifts to their alma maters—particularly through scholarships. Their financial planner suggested including a gift now as well as in their estate plan to reach their philanthropic goals. Their gift will establish an endowed scholarship, providing support to Framingham State graduates pursuing a law degree at Suffolk University Law School.
The Walshes view their gift as an investment in the lives of current and future law students, putting them on the path towards success with a practice-ready legal education that empowers them to make a positive impact on the world. In recognition of their generosity, the Walshes are being recognized as members of Suffolk University’s legacy society, the Frost Society.
Andrew Perlman, Dean of Suffolk University Law School, is excited to welcome Dick to the Dean’s Cabinet. “We are grateful that Richard Walsh decided to join the Dean’s Cabinet. Richard is a part of a distinguished community of loyal benefactors who are dedicated to supporting and advancing the Law School’s mission through philanthropy and strategic consultation.”
Dick says his degrees in history and law prepared him well for his career in the federal government and that at Suffolk he made friendships that have lasted throughout his life. He is proud of Suffolk’s growth and national recognition, and he is confident in Suffolk’s future. The Walshes encourage others to consider leaving their legacies at Suffolk in support of the University’s educational mission and the students who will be the world’s future leaders.
